Beach Break – Lettuce Lake Park near Tampa Hike

I love to hike with my family out of state. Its fun to look for other animals, and to see other landscape than what we have at home.  This park was a little tricky for my GPS to find.  It kept putting us in a business park up the street from where we really needed to be. But it was so worth the U-turns to get to the park!

I like to do things that are fun yet cheap, this is a perfect example! Just $2 a car load to enter.  We parked near the visitors center to use the bathroom before our hike.  There were examples of local wildlife and a nice little log book for people to enter what animals they had seen on the boardwalk path.  A group of young children had visited just before us and one child wrote he had seen “a big black snack!”  So we had to keep our eyes open for a big black snack according to Daughter.  We got quite the chuckle out of it as we walked the beautiful boardwalk.

We were very lucky being late fall lots of animals were sitting out in the sun.
A rare Florida squirrel
Half way through we found that big black snack! Yuck!!!!
And these beauties we had read about at the nature center.

We had a crazy count of over 20 turtles, 8 birds, 4 gators, and 1 big black snack.  We all agreed that next time we are in the Tampa area we will come back to Lettuce Lake Park.  We had a great time in-spite of the big black snack we saw.

  6. That is a huge snack. Isn’t is Florida that is having problems with non-native pythons eating everything? I think you got a great deal…. ps… My GPS takes me to some interesting places like dead-ends…. Thank you for linking in…. Michelle

  11. I think the turtle might have actually been that big black snack – poor guy’s shell looks awful. Thanks for the recommendation of another great place to check out!

  12. lovely post. I loved the gators and birds and even the snake. I don’t mind if they are not the agressive kind. Once I read Florida though I got the eebie jeebies and know ther are more than harmless black snakes in there. I pass……….Were you on shore or on the water. I was busy looking at the pictures.
When in South Carolina we went to a park and saw gaters but from the safety of a boardwalk. Was not worried about what I could see but what I could not. Great pictures though

How fun! My In Laws used to live in Naples. They took us on many an alligator tour. I was always struck by how still the were, but knowing they were not to be taken lightly.
