Our family appreciates a good BBQ place. In the upper Midwest our choices are often pretty slim so when we travel south we find BBQ. One of the legendary BBQ places is the Salt Lick in Driftwood.
We thought it would be wise to try such a popular place at an off time. Monday for late lunch sounded good to us. It was about twenty minutes from the zoo to Salt Lick on very hilly roads.
We were seated inside of the main building. Yes, there are trees growing in through the building. Next building over is a small wine/beer shop. Husband popped over there for a beer for with his meal.
This place is rather large and it cracked us up to see groups sitting with the cooler next to the table. Our state does not allow you to byob! And a reminder its cash only to pay.
The sides are the same on every plate so its served with potato salad, cole slaw & beans. (Bread, pickles & onions on request.) I had Thurman’s choice which is brisket, ribs and sausage. The rest of the family had pork rib plates.
It was fun to watch them smoking the meat inside. It smells amazing out in the huge parking lot. My plate was good but at the airport we had the pulled pork sandwich and I enjoyed that flavor more from the Salt Lick.
