Our Annual December Getaway

This past December like the prior two we headed to a warmer climate for seafood and relaxation.  We tossed around going back to South Padre again, I swear we have the same conversation each August.  While it was a top contender it was not our winner for our December 2016 trip.

We booked an 8 night trip to the Gulf Coasts of Louisiana and Mississippi this time.  New Orleans has been on my travel list for a while and it fit the requirements.    Really easy requirements like many chain hotels, seafood, free entertainment and no snow.  I had mistakenly thought it would be warm in December and was sweating it when the predicted highs the week before we left in the low 50s.   Luckily there was a rebound and it was in the 70’s during our trip.

This trip was 3 nights on points at the Country Inn and Suites on Magazine Street in New Orleans. The fourth night I had found a very cheap rate of $111 so I paid for our last night at the hotel instead of points.

Then we used 1 Marriott point night and 3 nights on IHG points from February’s mail in contest winnings.  We found that they are very generous with the AAA discount in the area and that saved us on almost all of our activities that were not free.  Airfare was on Delta and by studying dates we were able to keep the costs lower.  Our largest expense was food.  I found a Groupon helpful but once we were out of NOLA costs were much lower like we expected.
