Our Christmas Texas Trip Rollup

Here is a roll up of our Christmas Texas trip.  Somethings I think we did very inexpensively like our hotels.  Other things we went a little over budget on like food…  I wish I had been able to convince the family to do more food planning to save on those costs.  I think we did alright on our entertainment costs between Groupon and picking lower cost options like the mission tour.  Some things like sitting in the hot tub on Christmas Eve after opening our presents do not have a price tag!

Residence Inn Austin Round Rock – 15,000 points

Dickey’s BBQ  – Groupon

Innerspace Cavern – Buy 1 get 1 free so had to pay for 2 people instead of 3 with the entertainment book coupon online.

Radisson Austin Downtown – 44,000 points for two nights.

Dinner at Russian House – no discount

Austin Trail of lights – no discount but got airline miles through Groupon

Austin Zoo – Groupon and generous sharing person covered our 3rd person

The Salt Lick BBQ – no discount

Government Canyon Park Hike – no discount but still cheap

Residence Inn Alamo Place – Marriott anniversary night free category 1-5

Iron Catcus for dinner – no discount

Bad Wolf Ghost Tours- Groupon

Mission Trail Visit- no charge to visit the 4 missions

Radisson Corpus Christi – 2 nights 44,000 points and 1 night $80.50

Blackbeard Restaurant – Groupon

USS Lexington Ship Tour – $1 off coupon

Christmas Night Dinner at Radisson – very painful price with no discount due to Holiday

Alamo Car rental for the trip $169.02 and very little on gas.  This car was amazing on gas considering how many miles we drove with the AC on high.

Flights on South West had to pay for one and a half tickets, points for the other round trip and a one way.

The Salt Lick BBQ

Our family appreciates a good BBQ place.  In the upper Midwest our choices are often pretty slim so when we travel south we find BBQ.  One of the legendary BBQ places is the Salt Lick in Driftwood.

We thought it would be wise to try such a popular place at an off time.  Monday for late lunch sounded good to us.  It was about twenty minutes from the zoo to Salt Lick on very hilly roads.

Pitt’s BBQ Goodness

I LOVE a good BBQ place! We really have nothing close to where I live so when we travel I am on the hunt for good BBQ.  Daughter and I found one in South Bend a few weeks ago. It was so good we went a second time to take some home with us!

We plugged the directions into the GPS and from “downtown” South Bend we had a short 8 minute drive.  And from the shopping mall in Mishawaka it was only 15 minutes.

Inside there are a few tables and chairs if you chose to dine in like we did. (Staying in a hotel or bed and breakfast its best to eat BBQ elsewhere.)  Service was friendly and quick. Our first night we shared a combo platter, chicken sandwich, baked beans and mac-n-cheese.  Wowza, that was a lot of food!!!!! And everything was fabulous!

The second visit we took two combo platters wrapped up so we could heat them up later at home.  Husband doesn’t mind our travels as long as we treat him once in a while.  He nibbled on his BBQ platter all afternoon from the fridge.  Daughter and I split the other one for dinner, and I still had a bit of pork to take the next day for lunch. Yummy!

I think you get what you give in life to some extent. This guy really, really was helpful and friendly.  He gave us a couple of samples each night while we were trying to narrow down our choices.  He answered a couple of questions we had about the area and things to do on Saturday.  I really hope his business grows through the roof and suggest you all go try his BBQ.  Just save a little for me when I get the chance to visit!
