Holiday Inn Savannah Historic District

Since Daughter choose Savannah a city with several chain hotels my job was a little easier than in some towns.  Savannah’s historic area is compact at almost a mile wide along the river and two miles deep to  Forsyth Park.  Park the car in a city garage and walk everywhere.

I had several IHG (Holiday Inn) properties to pick from.  There is a Holiday Inn Express, Hotel Indigo, Staybridge Suites, and the Holiday Inn.  I had a little over 20,000 IHG points in my account, most of those were left over from the mail in promotion I did in February.  Those points and $40 allowed me to book a Friday night at the Holiday Inn Savannah Historic District.  Had I paid cash the 2 double bed room books for $219.84 plus tax.

South Haven Anniversary Weekend Away

Husband was looking for a short weekend getaway for our anniversary a couple of weeks back. His requirements were good food, hot tub and breakfast.  Well that is easy enough!

After the IHG points mail in promotion I was open to adding more IHG points to our account.  Their current promo adds 5,000 points if you stay in May so I went on the hunt for an IHG property.

In South Haven there is Holiday Inn Express located just east of town.  South Haven has great Lake Michigan beaches and good food.  The hotel also offered Jacuzzi tubs in some of the rooms so booking this hotel was a no-brainer!

Holiday Inn Express in King of Prussia

We found ourselves in King of Prussia for the night before our first college tour of the trip.  King of Prussia is know for its HUGE shopping mall.  They seemed to have every store imaginable here!

The Holiday Inn faces the very busy I-76 and is next door to a Hooters and Ruth’s Chris steakhouse. There was ample parking and I was staying here on my IHG points.  This hotel is 15,000 points or cash would have been $139 for two queen beds.  I do not think I would pay $139 for this hotel.

Our service was good.  The front desk was friendly and check in was quick.  The hotel has a fitness center and just through the fitness center is a small hot tub.  There is no pool at this hotel.

We had a room on the 7th floor facing the highway.  The hotel is a bit dated even though our room seemed to have been redone in the last year or so. We also had a small cement balcony outside attached to our room.

We drove the mile and a half to Red Lobster for dinner.  Basically you just drive around the side of the huge mall to many chain food options.  We had a gift card to use so it was Red Lobster heaven for Daughter.

Sometime later in the evening a bus full of students arrived at the hotel.  We never heard them so kudos to the staff for keeping the hotel quiet!  The only thing I did hear was a semi engine braking for a crazy amount of time on the highway that woke me from a dead sleep.  So even though we never heard normal traffic I would suggest a room on the other side of the hotel!

Breakfast layout was great.  When its busier the room is set up with duplicate items on both sides.  Being less busy only one side of the breakfast was open.  The student group was just leaving at 7:30 when we came down to breakfast.  Lots of tables and space in the breakfast area!

Saving points for a “rainy day” or to drag your Mom across the state on 48 hours notice

My parents are good sports.  They put up with my desire to travel and sometimes they are even willing to come along.  To be able to travel on a whim I try to keep some points available because I usually have more points than money to spend.

I was reading my Facebook updates when I saw that Kristen from “We are that family” was going to be at a women’s conference on the other side of the state.  I was so excited!  I had stalked her blog for years, reading it daily and here she was going to be with in driving distance.  I HAD to go!!!!

This was a Wednesday I think and the conference was bright and early Saturday morning in March 2013.  The conference was free, even better!!!!   So I went thru my mental list of people who might be able to come with me, it was a short list.  My sister had to work, others had their kids and it was short notice.  Called up my Mom who was game and I went to work on hotel options. There were not very many hotels out there.  And to make things more interesting in March I usually have very little extra money in the budget to do fun stuff.   So I had to use hotel points to make this work easily.

This is why I collect points, IF some opportunity knocks I can still go. I don’t have to say I don’t have the money right now for a $125 hotel room.

I booked with my priority club points at the Holiday Inn Express.  Upon arrival we received an awesome upgrade to a two queen room suite.  Perfect since it was my Mom, Daughter and her friend.  We had plenty of room to sprawl out for the night.  The girls swam in the pool for a couple of hours, dinner was Little Caesar’s that I picked up around the corner from the hotel. Breakfast was at the hotel and $7 for the lunch at the free conference.

So our sudden crazy trip was $0 for the hotel, $8 for Little Caesar’s and $14 for lunch. The kids were able to eat free at the conference.  And gas to drive 3 and a half hours each way.  This is why I keep hotel points around in a few programs, you never know when you get an opportunity!

If you get a chance please check out “We are That Family”.  Kristen and Mercy House are doing some incredible work over in Kenya with pregnant girls living in extreme poverty.
