We spent our one night in San Antonio at the Residence Inn Downtown/Alamo Plaza. We had many Marriott choices when picking where we wanted to stay. Husband had his free anniversary stay certificate to use for our trip so we needed a category 5 or lower Marriott. We could have done the Fairfield Inn across the street, Sprinhill Suites or Towneplace Suites all in the same area. Residence Inn had a one bedroom suite available so they won by default.
The hotel is a five minute walk from the riverwalk. Its so close! Even closer is the Alamo!
Our one bedroom looked just like any other Residence Inn so I must not have taken a picture of our room. Daughter was pleased to take over the couch and her own tv. We were a bit worn from our hike earlier so Daughter elected not to visit the pool with Husband and I . The pool are was empty at 4pm and we had the hot tub to ourselves.

We took our annual Christmas vacation last week. I guess its annual now that we were discussing where we were going next year on Christmas night. This years destination was middle Texas. Husband wanted seafood and beach. I wanted BBQ and the kid is along for the trip.
We flew in Saturday afternoon to Austin. I had two night reserved in Austin starting Sunday that could not be adjusted since they were booked in April under the second night free policy. I really needed a place to sleep and did not want to use many points for it.
I used the hotel reward mapper site and found a Residence Inn in Round Rock that is only 15,000 points a night for a one bedroom. A little leg work on Tripadvisor showed me there was enough to do in the area for 24 hours before moving onto Austin.

IF I have time prior to my trip I reprice my hotel reservation. Meaning I go to the hotel website and pretend to make a reservation. I had the Country Inn and Suites Washington Dulles booked for one night at the AAA rate of $81. I was happy enough at that price. But I just made another reservation for the same room style and date for $10 less. $70.34 plus tax.
Always make sure you can cancel the higher cost reservation with no penalty. (I book refundable rates because I lose nothing if my plans change.) Then I finish out the lower priced reservation and get a confirmation number before I go back in and cancel the higher priced reservation.
You do not always find a lower rate, sometimes you get lucky like I did today. And I will check it one more time before I leave because it takes me less than five minutes to save some money.
I usually travel with a child who likes a pool but loves a water park! We have some Marriott rewards nights to burn so I was trying to figure out what my Marriott water park type hotel options were.
Fairfield Inn and Suites in Gillette Wyoming is a category 2 with several large water slides that go through the building and several pools.
Marriott is out with their new fall promo for 2014 and it run through the rest of the year.
Marriott is out with a new credit card offer of 70,000 bonus points after a $2,000 spend in three months. Also 1 free night to start in a category 1-4 hotel and a 1 free night in a category 1-5 on your account anniversary.
You earn 5 points for every $1 at Marriott hotels, 2 points per $1 on airline tickets and car rentals. And 1 point per $1 on everything else.
The hotel category one redemption is 7,500 points up to hotel category nine which is 45,000 points.
A category one hotel is Fairfield Inn and Suite McAllen Airport in Texas. A category nine is the Bohemian hotel in Savannah. A category five hotel is the Courtyard Grand Rapids at 25,000 points a night.
The word is that Marriott has purchased the Atlantis in the Bahamas. This would be a great way to stay on points! Not sure when they will allow you to start booking but this could be a very sweet redemption!
