Grills Riverside for Rock Shrimp

We had eaten some very good meals while on vacation and wanted our final meal to top our trip off.  We settled on Grills Riverside in Melbourne because they had shark on the menu.  Husband has a food bucket list and shark was on it.

We arrived around 5:30 since we had skipped lunch.  We had been too full from Sun on the Beach to even consider lunch! The indoor restaurant tables were pretty empty but the outdoor bar area was busier.

Our server was great, very quick and helpful with our menu questions.  Daughter and Husband started with a rock shrimp appetizer.  They died and went to heaven!  It was their first sample of rock shrimp and once they got them peeled they were in love. Daughter was hoarding them on her plate and there might have been some food stealing going on.

For our entrees Daughter got a burger, Husband had the shark kabobs and I had the chicken.  Daughter even like the piece of shark she tried.  My chicken was very good and Daughter inhaled her burger.  We even discussed getting another order of rock shrimp for dessert but then Husband figured they were full enough.

When we were heading out a band was setting up to play outside on the deck. We had visited the Grills in Port Canaveral before but we think the one in Melbourne is much better!

Lets just end with IF you have the opportunity to try rock shrimp, do NOT pass it by.  Today again Daughter commented on how she wished she had some rock shrimp right now.

Rusty’s Seafood and Oyster Bar Take Two

While fishing in the morning our guides mentioned that Rusty’s had $.90 oyster happy hour.  We had been to Rusty’s on a prior trip but had forgotten about happy hour.  We arrived a little before 4pm for oyster happy hour.

We easily found an open table on the deck it was early and Tuesday.  We like to sit near the water side of the deck and watch the boats pass.  If its later afternoon we like to watch the cruise ships leave and wave back to the people.

Cocoa Beach Killing Time

We had fished and looking to kill some time before hitting an early dinner on Tuesday.  We decided to head up the road to Cocoa Beach to see what was in the area.  And we wanted to scope out where we needed to be for Surf’n Santas the next morning.

We found easy free two hour parking and poked around the couple of shops that were open.  Several said they were closed for the week which surprised me thinking it would be busier in the area over Christmas.

Then we set off to the beach one block over.  It was in the high 70’s and perfect for walking the beach.

We spent almost an hour on the beach walking in the waves and looking at shells.

This beach is perfect for families.  Lots of places to park and walk out onto the beach.  And if you are a little older Coconuts was right on the beach at the causeway for an adult drink.

Fishing Anyone?

A week before we left Husband and i were perusing Groupon looking for our trip activities.  He saw a couple of listings for fishing and thought it sounded fun.  I went to yelp and tripadvisor to check the company reviews, not something i thought would be a good fit for us.  The reviews were horrible, check before you buy!

I then started to look at any fishing trip in the area either Cocoa Beach or Melbourne area.  Most of them were expensive charters that went on the ocean with your group.  I couldn’t spend $600 and hope the ocean would not make me sick.  Husband didn’t want to go alone with another group either.  Fishing was not looking likely!  Then tripadvisor had a promising listing: Cast Away Adventures.  They had 100% positive reviews.  And they did not go out on the ocean so that is a plus for me!

I was hoping they had openings when I called the next morning.  Sue answered the call and walked me through the fishing options.  They offer two and four hour trips for up to 6 people a time.  No one was booked yet on the morning I requested so we were able to pick an 8am start time. (If you are coming from Orlando they can start later if you need travel time.)  Husband was happy so I was happy!  Fishing is one thing we still had not tried on our travels.

Sue sent me directions in the confirmation and the dock was about 5 minutes from the hotel.  We woke up that morning to a very foggy port.  We couldn’t see our car from our room window at 7am,.  I checked my phone a couple of times but there was no cancellation.  A fishing we will go!

We arrived at the dock a little before 8 and easily found our guides for the morning, Sue and Tony.  The boat set off through the fog across the bay, they explained with the manatees that the boats were required to idle slowly to keep them safe.  By 8:30 the fog was burning off and we were catching fish near the lock.

Daughter caught the first fish, a puffer.  We went on to catch lots of puffers!  The guides were patient with our re-baiting, casting and other mishaps.  i caught rocks, the side of the locks, anything that will keep your tackle.  Husband loved it because he could fish without having to help us all the time.  I just liked being out on the water and viewing nature.  Daughter won our family bragging rights for most different fish.  Husband might have landed the most and he caught the most variety of items.  A clam shell, a bird stole his bait, & he landed a rock into the boat.  Husband has skill, my rocks stayed on the the bay floor!

We also saw a couple of dolphins by the locks and manatee swam past us by the bridge.  I was so excited, we had not seen manatee in the wild before!  The four hours flew past, I had taken water and a few snacks but we really didn’t need them.

We all agreed this was a trip highlight!  We already are talking about going fishing again next time.

IF you have any inclining to go on a nature tour or fishing trip please call up Sue. They took care of everything and it was so nice to relax.  For more information:

Cruising from Port Canaveral? Watch the Port Cam Here!

In the cold long days prior to our Disney cruise I liked to watch the Port Canaveral Webcam to lighten my mood.

Even if the Disney Dream is not in port there is plenty to see. I have seen a submarine, fishing boats, yachts and other cruise ships pass by.

Ron Jon Surf Shop Cocoa Beach, Florida

We visited the Ron Jon Surf Shop in Cocoa Beach, Florida.  We parked in their lot and did the required tourist T-shirt purchase.  Purchasing something gave us free parking at the store.  Ron Jon is right by the beach, so we crossed the little side road and let Daughter hit the ocean for the first time.  (Which she admitted looked just like Lake Michigan.)  We had spent the morning at the zoo  and were not sure if we would have time to swim.  So Daughter got a toe dip only that day and walking from the lot worked great for the few minutes we were there.

Tourist shopping, free parking and a first toe dip in the ocean.

Ron Jon Surf Shop is open 24 hours.

The store is just up A1A/ North Atlantic  from the Port Canaveral Cruise Port. Maybe a 10 minute drive.

Radisson Resort at the Port – hotel stay at Port Canaveral

Prior to our cruise we always drive to the area the night before.  Less stress, no worries about missing the ship and usually we can find a cheap room.  We make this a leisurely day, often we go to the ocean and have a nice dinner.

The last cruise from Port Canaveral we stayed at the Radisson at the port.  To be fair most of the hotels in the area cost the same amount for the night that we needed.  What pushed me to book here instead of our normal hotel was the Club Carlson Radisson book one get one promo.  If we stayed at any Radisson we got a night at any Radisson, I had to do that deal! Why not get a free upcoming night if you are paying the same amount no matter what hotel you pick?

The Radisson Resort at the Port is a little bit older hotel, but it was in great shape! My Daughter loved the pool area and we liked to listen to the band that was playing out by the pool.  We had a room facing the parking lot which was great, we figured it would be quieter than the pool facing rooms.  The room was spacious with two queen beds.  We spent most of the night out by the pool after dinner.  When it was time to check out I was again reminded how nice it is to have the rental car. There was a mob of people in the lobby waiting to shuttle to the cruise ships.  We do not use the free shuttle with the mob of people, just not something I choose to do for my own sanity!

The pool area is very large.

There is a nice landscaped courtyard in the center of the hotel to the left of the pool area.

We would stay here again prior to a cruise.  You are a very short 10 minute drive from the port from the hotel. If you want to use Club Carlson hotel points this one is 38,000.  Or if you want to pay its usually around $100 a night.

Country Inn and Suites Port Canaveral, Florida

We stayed at the Country Inn and Suites in Port Canaveral prior to our cruise.

The hotel is the closest one to the port which is relative as most hotels are  within a mile of each other. The nice thing is if you ask for a port facing room you get this view.

The hotel has a very large outdoor pool, a very cool looking hot tub  with a waterfall and a little kids splash pool with a sprinkler water feature.

The rooms are standard Country  Inn and Suites, costs around $100-110 a night.  Or 38,000 Club Carlson points. We had a great stay and are very open to staying here again before our cruise.

The best part is telling your child to look out the window the next morning to see this:
