Traveling in One Carry-on to Europe… Did it Work?

Earlier I had posted that Daughter and I each purchased an Osprey bag for our summer travel.  She chose the Farpoint 55 and I went with the Ozone Convertible 22 inch.  So did they work for us?  Would we truly be able to travel in one bag?

The short answer is yes… Hers worked extremely well and mine worked well.  I will be honest and say I never wore mine as a backpack.  I wheeled it most places and carried it when I had to. The bag was only 12 kg (26 pounds) when it was full at the airport on the way home.  I carried on the bag to Europe and checked it on the way back.

Travelodge on South Padre

We had a change of plans for our last night in southern Texas.  We were supposed to stay at the Casa De Palmas in McAllen.  I had the stay booked on a certificate so the night would be free.  But it was hot, we missed the beach and Daughter really wanted to surf again.  Back to South Padre for us!!!!

We found a reasonable last minute night at the AAA rate at the Travelodge South Padre of $89.  The Travelodge is two stories and an easment property on the beach.  They have beach access through a little (and by little I mean VERY narrow) walkway.  IF you meet someone with a cooler you need to back up…

The hotel also has a decent sized pool and hot tub for families.  The pool was very busy during our stay so daughter did not swim very long.

The rooms had been updated even though the hotel appeared to be older.

We enjoyed our stay here immensely.  The dedicated beach walkway across the parking lot made it easy to pop out to the beach at dusk.  In under 3 minutes you were on the sand.

We are making plans to return to this hotel next summer.  The location is perfect for our family and the price is fantastic for a “beach” hotel.  I can walk 3 minutes to save $100 a night!

ClearWater Beach, Florida Weekend

After our cruise we spent a few days in the Tampa area. Daughter wanted to swim in the Gulf so we drove from Tampa to Clearwater Beach.  It was about 40 minutes over the causeway to the beach area.  We were able to park the car and get into our room at the  Clearwater Beach Travelodge right away.  We changed into our swim suits and headed across the street to the Gulf.

We walked up the beach to the pier and watched someone land a huge cow ray.  I think we watched almost an hour as he struggled with the fishing pole and finally brought up the huge ray.

Our hotel was across the street from the beach, a quick 30 second walk was all it took to hit the sand. I can walk a little to save over $100 a night on the hotel. And with nothing built in front of the hotel we had great beach views from the rooms.  The hotel is old but clean. And it has a pool in the center courtyard so Daughter was happy.  I know that sounds odd being right next to the Gulf but she wanted to swim in the pool for a while at night.

The hotel is behind these trees…

After dinner that night we walked the block back to the pier 60 area. They had buskers performing and selling their items on the pier. What a riot!!!! We saw people juggle fire, escaped from a straight jacket, sing and dance.

Also right at the front of the pier they were playing the movie Ghost Busters on a huge inflatable movie screen on the grass.  There were a lot of people watching the movie and performers, it was a great time.  And best of all it was all free!  We looked at peoples crafts they were selling and nibbled on some popcorn we bought.

After crashing in the waves all day it was nice to relax and just hang out around the pier area. We walked the beach back to the hotel in the dark.
